Daily Verses Everyday! Day 7
“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
Here, God shows His abundant provision for mankind. Before sin entered the world, there was no lack, no struggle for survival, and no need for bloodshed. Humanity’s food was to come from the plants and trees God had created, freely given and readily available. We must remember that in verse 11, God commanded, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, [and] the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed [is] in itself.” This reveals that God is a God of order. From the beginning, He designed creation to sustain itself. Plants were created with seeds, ensuring they would bring forth new generations. In this way, humanity’s food source was not temporary but ongoing, a continual reminder of God’s wisdom and foresight.
The gift of seed-bearing plants and fruit-bearing trees also points to God’s long-term care for His creation. Within every seed lies the potential for future provision. It is as if God had woven into creation a guarantee of His faithfulness, a cycle of life that continually renews itself according to His will. Humanity’s responsibility, then, was simple yet profound: to receive this gift with gratitude and to cultivate it wisely. Even before the Fall, man was given work, but it was not toil or burden; it was stewardship. Adam and Eve were called to tend and keep the garden, to exercise dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moved upon the Earth. Their labor was meant to be an act of worship, flowing from gratitude and partnership with God.
This verse reminds us that God’s original design for humanity was abundance, peace, and responsibility, not scarcity, conflict, or exploitation. If Adam had never sinned, the Earth would still reflect this perfect harmony, and humanity would joyfully labor in cultivating God’s creation as faithful stewards of His provision. The King James Bible closes this verse with the word “meat.” In 1611, meat did not mean flesh or animal food as we often use it today. Rather, it was a general word for “food” or “sustenance.” This is why in Matthew 3:4, it says, “And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.” Thus, the verse simply teaches that every seed-bearing plant and every fruit-bearing tree was given to mankind for nourishment. In this, we see God’s generosity and His intention that His creation would supply all that humanity needed.
If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
