Daily Verses Everyday! Day 14

“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:”

The serpent’s reply marks a turning point in the narrative. Up until this moment, his strategy had been subtle with posing questions, planting seeds of doubt, and twisting perspective. But here, the deception moves into open defiance. The serpent directly contradicts the Word of God: “Ye shall not surely die.” This is more than a lie; it is a bold attack on God’s truthfulness and character. If God said, “you shall surely die” in Genesis 2:17 and the serpent says, “you shall not,” then the heart of the temptation is clear. Whose word will Eve trust?

At its core, every temptation we face comes down to this same question: Will we believe God’s Word, or will we believe the lies that contradict it? The good news is that God has not left us defenseless. For every temptation, there is ample Scripture that arms us for battle. When we hide God’s Word in our hearts, it becomes the weapon we need to combat the lies of the enemy. As the psalmist declares in Psalm 119:11, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

This is why Ephesians 6:17 calls Scripture the sword of the Spirit. Unlike the shield, which protects us from attack, or the helmet, which guards our mind, the sword is the weapon we actively use to strike back. Hebrews 4:12 tells us it is living and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, able to pierce through lies, expose motives, and cut through every falsehood the enemy presents. Eve faltered because she entertained the serpent’s words more than she trusted God’s Word. But Jesus, armed with the sword of Scripture, was able to silence Satan in the wilderness.

The obvious lesson is that when we are equipped with God’s Word and wield it faithfully, we are not helpless against temptation; rather, we are armed with divine power. That being said, we also must remember that the flesh is weak. Even with the sword of Scripture at our disposal, our human desires, emotions, and inclinations can make us vulnerable to deception. Knowledge of God’s Word alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by a heart fully committed to obeying and trusting Him. Eve’s failure demonstrates how easily the flesh can be swayed when it latches onto half-truths or entertains doubt.

This is why continual reliance on the Spirit, prayer, and accountability is essential. The sword of the Spirit is effective only when wielded in union with God’s power and wisdom, not merely by human effort. Temptation may exploit our weaknesses, but when we acknowledge our dependence on God, we can resist the lies of the enemy and walk in obedience, just as Christ did.

If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
