Daily Verses Everyday! Day 6

“And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that [it was] good.”

In this verse, we see something truly profound: “And God created great whales.” It is striking that Scripture highlights the whale first. When we think about it, this makes perfect sense because whales are the largest animals ever to exist, with some species weighing up to 180 tons. The sheer size and majesty of such a creature reflect the greatness of its Creator. It’s almost as if God deliberately calls our attention to this extraordinary part of His creation to remind us of His power and creativity.

But just as in the earlier days of creation, there is more here than just size or wonder. God was creating with order, with purpose, and with balance. The seas were filled with creatures “after their kind,” each able to reproduce and multiply so that the oceans would remain full of life. In the same way, the birds of the sky were also created to reproduce and flourish. Nothing was left incomplete as every creature was designed to live in harmony with its environment, providing what was needed for the balance of creation.

When we stop to think about this, it is incredible how each animal is uniquely formed. Consider the bat, for example. Although it is small, it possesses an extraordinary system of echolocation that allows it to “see” in the dark with sound. This complex and precise design could not have come about by chance. It reminds us that every single creature, whether vast like the whale or tiny like the bat, was carefully fashioned by God with purpose and intentionality.

What amazes me is that even within the same category, “every winged fowl,” for instance, no two species are exactly alike. Each bird has distinct abilities, colors, and behaviors that set it apart. The same is true of the creatures of the sea: from microscopic plankton to the enormous whale, each is different, yet all play a role in the thriving of creation.

And when God looked at all this diversity and abundance, He declared that it was good. What a beautiful reminder this is for us: that creation is not just functional but good in the eyes of the One who made it. The vastness, the variety, and the wonder of life in the skies and seas all point back to the glory of God.

If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
