Daily Verses Everyday! Day 76
“Now Abraham and Sarah [were] old [and] well stricken in age; [and] it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.”
Genesis 18:11 confronts us with a truth so honest that it almost feels harsh. The Holy Spirit does not hide the couple’s limitations. He highlights them. Abraham and Sarah are not in the prime of life. They are not full of youthful strength, vitality, or energy. Their bodies have slowed, their years have increased, and their natural abilities have declined. Sarah has already passed the season of fertility. Nature itself has sealed her womb. Every human marker testifies that the time for childbearing has passed. And yet this is the moment God chooses to move. This is the stage He deliberately selects. This is the backdrop against which His glory will shine brightest, for God is not limited by the boundaries of human strength, human timing, human biology, or human expectation. He is sovereign over time, Lord over age, and completely in control of the rhythms and seasons of our lives.
This verse is a theological proclamation that God—not youth, not strength, not physical capability—is the determining factor of destiny. We live in a world that idolizes youth and fears aging. Society tells us that once a certain age is reached, our utility declines and our story begins to fade. But Scripture boldly contradicts that lie. In God’s kingdom, age does not diminish purpose; it often amplifies it. God does not look at Abraham and Sarah and see two people who are “past their prime.” He sees exactly the vessels He intends to use. Their age is not a barrier to God’s plan; it is an essential part of it. God waited until they were old, “well stricken in age,” and physically incapable so the world would understand that the coming miracle rests entirely upon His power. When all human strength is gone, God reveals divine strength. When natural possibilities end, supernatural purposes begin. When Sarah’s body ceased to function “after the manner of women,” God declared, “Now I will begin My work.”
This truth reaches into our own lives with incredible comfort and conviction. Many people believe that if they haven’t accomplished something for God by a certain age, they never will. They think they are too old, too late, too broken, too tired, too worn out, too far past opportunity. But Genesis 18:11 exposes that lie at its roots. God is the Author of time. He chooses the seasons of our lives. He determines when a calling begins or blooms. He can start a ministry in your twenties or your eighties. He can launch your greatest purpose in your final decades. Moses was 80 when God called him from the burning bush. Caleb was 85 when he asked for the mountain promised to him. Anna the prophetess was elderly when she beheld the Christ child in the temple. Age is never a disqualification; it is often the very canvas on which God paints His greatest works.
Abraham and Sarah’s story teaches us that God is not waiting for the moment when we are most capable; He is waiting for the moment when His power will be most clearly seen. Their bodies were failing, but their God was not. Their strength was gone, but His strength was just beginning to be revealed. Their time had passed, but God’s timing had arrived. Sarah’s womb was empty and that made room for God to fill it. Her body had ceased to function and that gave God the stage to demonstrate His creative power. God is completely sovereign over the details of our lives. Our limitations do not intimidate Him. Our age does not slow Him. Our weaknesses do not hinder Him. In fact, they often qualify us all the more, for His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Genesis 18:11 stands as a declaration across all ages: If God has purposed something for your life, no amount of time, age, weakness, or impossibility can stop it. If God desires to use you in a powerful way, He will do so regardless of what your body, circumstances, or culture says about your “season.” You are never too old to be used by God. You are never past your purpose. You are never beyond His reach. Abraham and Sarah’s story reveals that the God who is sovereign over creation is also sovereign over your timeline. And when He moves, even age must bow to His will.
If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
