Daily Verses Everyday! Day 12
“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;”
Now, we’ve all heard this verse discussed, and many of us pause to wonder why God chose a rib rather than another part of the body. When we examine the original Hebrew, the word used is ṣela, which can mean “rib,” but it is more accurately understood as “side.” This nuance is significant. God did not take from Adam’s head, which might suggest Eve is superior, nor from his feet, which might suggest Eve is inferior. Instead, He took from Adam’s side—his lateral, central part. This points to equality and closeness, symbolizing that Eve would be his partner, by his side, neither above nor beneath him.
This view is crucial for understanding the true dynamic God intended for a man and woman to possess. They are equal in essence, created to reflect the image of God together, each complementing the other without one dominating or being subservient. By taking Eve from Adam’s side, God established a foundation of partnership, intimacy, and mutual respect, showing that human relationships are meant to be built on equality, shared purpose, and deep connection. The symbolism extends beyond mere physical origin; it reflects the relational design God envisioned for marriage and companionship. Just as Adam and Eve were meant to walk side by side, supporting and sustaining one another, so too are men and women called to participate in life together with shared responsibility, care, and love. Their unity illustrates the deeper spiritual truth that human flourishing occurs not in isolation or hierarchy but in cooperative relationship, rooted in God’s wisdom and intention.
The imagery in this verse also conveys intimacy and care. God performed His work in the moment that Adam was placed into a deep sleep. It reminds us that God often works in ways that are hidden from us, in quiet and intimate moments, bringing about what is necessary for our wholeness and for the fulfillment of His plan. Just as Adam could not create a suitable companion himself, God intervened personally to provide exactly what was needed.
God is intentional in how He fulfills our needs. He knows what we lack, and He provides with wisdom, care, and perfect timing. Whether in relationships, provision, or spiritual growth, God works quietly and intimately, preparing what is best for us. And just as Adam slept and trusted God’s work, we are called to trust that God is at work in our lives, even in ways we may not fully understand.
If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
