Daily Verses Everyday! Day 12

“And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”

Here, the creation of woman reaches its completion. God takes what He formed from Adam’s side and shapes it into a woman, then personally brings her to the man. The language is intimate and deliberate. Eve is not simply made and left for Adam to discover; she is presented as a gift for Adam, directly from the hand of God.

This is why Ecclesiastes 9:9 says, “Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that [is] thy portion in [this] life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.” The verse emphasizes that a wife is not something earned or manufactured by human effort but rather a divine gift to be cherished and enjoyed. By presenting Eve in this way, God establishes a pattern: marriage and companionship are gracious provisions, not human inventions. Just as Adam did nothing to create or secure this relationship, as he slept while God worked, so too are our greatest blessings often given by God’s initiative, not our striving. Eve’s presentation shows that relationships are meant to be received with gratitude, stewarded with care, and treasured as part of God’s good design.

But what if you aren’t married? What if that isn’t in your cards? That’s okay too. Scripture makes it clear that marriage is a good gift, but it is not the only way God provides fulfillment. The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 7:7–8 that singleness is also a gift, and in verse 32, he explains why, “But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord.” Paul acknowledges that the married person must balance their devotion to Christ with the responsibilities of caring for their spouse, but the unmarried person is freed from that responsibility, able to give undivided attention to the Lord.

This perspective helps us understand that while marriage reflects God’s design for companionship and His covenant love, it is not the ultimate goal of life—Christ is. Whether we are married or single, our primary calling is to love and serve Him with all our heart. Marriage is a shadow of the greater reality: the union between Christ and His Church. For the single believer, devotion to Christ is not “less than” marriage; it is another form of wholehearted faithfulness that glorifies God just as much.

Therefore, the lesson of Genesis 2:22 is not limited to married couples. It teaches all of us to view relationships as gifts, never entitlements. It reminds married believers to cherish their spouse as God’s provision and single believers to cherish their freedom to pursue Christ with greater focus. Both paths are holy, both are gifts, and both are designed to point us back to the ultimate Bridegroom, Jesus Christ, who alone satisfies the deepest longings of the human soul.

If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
