Daily Verses Everyday! Day 25
“And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.”
Genesis 5:11 states, “And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.” Reflecting on this, we see the continuation of the early pattern of extraordinary lifespans. Adam died at 930 HC and Seth at 1042 HC; now, Enos passes at 1140 HC, living a total of 905 years. These overlapping lifespans are remarkable as they allowed multiple generations to coexist, providing opportunities for the transmission of knowledge, faith, and reverence for God. I know this is already the third person we’ve reflected on with an extraordinarily long lifespan, and we still have many more generations to cover.
Yet, it’s striking to consider the contrast with our modern human experience. Most of us live to around 70 or 80 years, and in that time, the amount of change we witness—whether technological, cultural, relational, and personal—is staggering. Now imagine living for nine or even 10 centuries! Enos, Seth, and Adam would have seen the gradual unfolding of human civilization across hundreds of years, experienced multiple generational shifts, and witnessed the cumulative effects of human choices in ways we can barely comprehend.
To put it in perspective, if you were born 900 years ago, which would be around 1100 AD, you would have witnessed the tail end of the Viking era, the rise of early medieval kingdoms in Europe, the construction of Romanesque cathedrals, and the spread of feudal societies. Imagine living through centuries of human history, seeing entire cultures rise and fall, wars begin and end, languages evolve, and technologies slowly develop—and all this while raising multiple generations of children and grandchildren.
Enos and his contemporaries had lifespans that allowed them to see humanity grow in ways we can only read about in history books. This perspective reminds us how extraordinary these early genealogies are. They weren’t just about numbers or impressive ages; they illustrate God’s providence across time. These long lives created opportunities for the faithful transmission of knowledge, the worship of God, and the nurturing of a godly lineage that would ultimately lead to the Messiah.
If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
