Daily Verses Everyday! Day 25
“And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:”
Enos was born in 235 HC, and Genesis 5:9 tells us, “And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan.” To determine the year of Cainan’s birth, we add Enos’ age of 90 to his birth year of 235, and we are able to infer that Cainan was born in 325 HC. This verse continues the carefully tracked genealogical record that is still building the foundation of God’s providential plan. Every age marker and birth is not just historical trivia; it shows the continuity of the godly line through which God’s redemptive purposes will move.
Enos’ name, meaning “mortal” or “frail,” reminds us of humanity’s weakness after the Fall. Despite that frailty, God faithfully preserves a line that will call upon His name, demonstrating that human weakness cannot thwart divine purpose. The name Cainan comes from a Hebrew root meaning “possession” or “sorrow,” though some interpret it as “acquired” or “smith.” Names in Genesis often carry theological or symbolic weight, signaling something about the person’s role in God’s unfolding plan. While Enos’ name highlighted human frailty, Cainan’s name suggests continuity and the human experience within God’s providence of human sorrow, labor, and the ongoing acquisition of life through God’s blessing.
Cainan’s birth at 325 HC continues the unbroken line from Adam through Seth, showing that God’s plan of redemption is progressing steadily, generation by generation. Even though humanity is frail and subject to mortality, God’s providence ensures that the line of promise is preserved. Each name, each lifespan, each birth in this genealogy is a testament to God’s faithfulness, pointing forward to the ultimate fulfillment of His promise in Christ.
If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
