Genesis 5:6 Daily Devotional & Meaning – Seth Begets Enos

Daily Verses Everyday! Day 24

“And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:”

Seth was born at 130 HC, and here, we are told that at the age of 105, he begot Enos. That would place Enos’ birth at 235 HC. Every time these verses give us an age marker, they are not just giving numbers for the sake of trivia; rather, they are showing us the continuity of God’s plan through history.

The name Enos comes from a Hebrew word meaning man or mortal; but more specifically, it emphasizes frailty or weakness. Unlike Adam’s name, which meant “man” in the sense of one created from the dust with dignity, and Seth’s name, which means “appointed” or “granted,” Enos’ name signifies a man in his fallen, weakened condition. In other words, his name highlights the reality of humanity under the curse: frail, dependent, and destined to return to the dust.

This is significant because Seth was appointed by God as the continuation of the godly line after Abel’s death. Eve herself declared this in Genesis 4:25: “For God…hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” Where Cain’s line produced rebellion and violence, Seth’s line was “appointed” to carry forward the promise. And so, in a beautiful contrast, Seth (appointed by God) gives birth to Enos (frail and mortal). It’s as if Scripture is showing us the tension of the human condition. Although we are frail and weak, God sovereignly appoints a way for His purposes to move forward. This is the story of redemption in miniature. Humanity is weak, but God appoints. Humanity fails, but God restores. Humanity is frail, but God sustains. Seth’s line is not just a bloodline; it is a testimony that God’s promises cannot be broken, even through weak and mortal vessels.

If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
