Daily Verses Everyday! Day 24
“And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat [a son] in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth:”
I know a lot of people out there don’t like to do math, but math is important because it helps us put events into context. In the context of this verse, Genesis 5:3, we are told that Adam was 130 years old when he fathered Seth. To better understand this, let’s establish a kind of biblical timeline. Let’s call the moment Adam was created HC 0 (Humanity’s Creation). For simplicity’s sake, that would be the “starting date” of humanity. Now the question arises: when the text says Adam was 130 years old, is that measured from his creation (HC 0) or from when sin entered the world? The text does not explicitly tell us, so we are going to assume it is from his creation, while acknowledging that it could also be counted from the moment of the Fall. The significance here connects back to the previous verse, where we saw that both Adam and Eve were called by the name “Adam.” This is further supported by the fact that Eve was not personally named until after the Fall.
Their unity as “Adam” in the eyes of God is emphasized again in this verse, because when it says Adam begot a son “in his own likeness, and after his image,” it’s not just Adam alone being represented. Seth is the fruit of their union, the visible reminder that the unity of Adam and Eve is forever on display. Even in a fallen world, the image of God is still being passed on through humanity. But now, unlike before the Fall, that image is marred by sin. Seth bore the likeness of Adam and Eve, and the line of promise would continue through him, pointing us toward the greater hope in Christ, who restores the perfect image of God in us.
If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
