Genesis 5:20 Daily Devotional & Meaning – And He Died: The Refrain of Mortality

Daily Verses Everyday! Day 27

“And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.”

This is the sixth time in Genesis 5 that we encounter the phrase, “and he died,” marking the end of a life. It has already been said for Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, and now Jared. The repetition of these three words emphasizes the reality and inevitability of human mortality, even in these early generations when lifespans were extraordinarily long. Each life recorded here overlaps with multiple others, creating a tapestry of human experience across centuries. Yet, despite the length of their years, each person ultimately faces the same conclusion—which is death. This simple, repeated phrase reminds us that human life, no matter how long, is finite and points forward to the hope that Scripture will eventually reveal: life does not end with death but finds fulfillment in God.

Thus, the genealogy of Genesis 5 is not merely a historical record of ages and births; it is a theological statement about God’s sovereignty, faithfulness, and the continuity of His plan across generations. While human life is finite and inevitably marked by death, God’s providence ensures that His purposes are fulfilled through the faithful, long-lived patriarchs. Each life serves as a link in the chain that preserves the knowledge of God, prepares the way for the promised seed, and demonstrates that His covenantal plan is both patient and persistent. The overlapping lifespans of these early generations allowed for the direct transmission of knowledge, faith, and devotion from one generation to the next in a way that modern human life, with its shorter spans, rarely permits. The repeated phrase “and he died,” therefore, carries both a sobering reminder of mortality and a subtle promise of continuity: even as individual lives end, God’s purposes continue, woven seamlessly through families, communities, and generations.

Jared’s death, like those before him, reminds us that while humanity experiences death as the consequence of sin, God’s redemptive plan is never thwarted. It is through this line, carefully preserved and multiplied, that the hope of salvation, ultimately realized in Christ, is brought to fulfillment.
