Genesis 6:16 Daily Devotional & Meaning – The One Door of the Ark

Daily Verses Everyday! Day 32

“A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; [with] lower, second, and third [stories] shalt thou make it.”

Here, God continues with His specific requirements for the ark, showing us once again that His plans are intentional and detailed. Nothing is left to chance, not even the placement of the window or the door. The window provided light and ventilation, while the single door set in the side reminds us that there was only one way into the ark. This becomes a powerful picture of salvation; just as there was one door to enter God’s provision of safety through the Flood, so too Jesus declares Himself the only way to the Father in John 14:6.

The command to build the ark with three levels also points to God’s order and provision. The ark was not a haphazard raft thrown together for survival; it was a carefully designed refuge capable of housing Noah, his family, and every living creature God chose to preserve. The three stories may even subtly foreshadow the completeness of God’s triune nature. Just as the ark had three levels but remained one vessel of salvation, so God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—three distinct entities, yet one God, working in perfect unity. The Father ordains the plan, the Son accomplishes redemption, and the Spirit applies it to our hearts. Together, they provide a complete and sufficient salvation, leaving nothing lacking.

This truth is reflected in Scripture, like in Matthew 28:19, Jesus commands “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost,” emphasizing the unity and distinct roles of the Trinity in the believer’s life. Paul’s blessing in 2 Corinthians 13:14 reminds us, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, [be] with you all. Amen.” This shows how all three persons of God are active in sustaining and nurturing the faithful. The ark stood as a physical picture of refuge, while the Trinity is the eternal reality of our refuge. Noah and his family would be sustained by God’s design, and we too are sustained by the fullness of God’s nature and work.

So, to conclude, Noah’s role was to obey, not to innovate. His trust was proven not by understanding all the reasons behind God’s instructions but by faithfully carrying them out exactly as God commanded.
