Genesis 6:17 Daily Devotional & Meaning – God’s Judgment and the Flood

Daily Verses Everyday! Day 32

“And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein [is] the breath of life, from under heaven; [and] every thing that [is] in the earth shall die.”

So as we’ve established, Noah is described as a friend of God, which means he has an intimate understanding of God’s character. When God speaks to Noah here, He is revealing a balance in His nature that Noah already knows. Exodus 34:6–7 tells us, “The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear [the guilty;] visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth [generation.]” Through this, God is communicating to Noah that His act of judgment is not a contradiction of His goodness, mercy, or longsuffering.

The phrase, “I, even I,” emphasizes God’s personal involvement and His unwavering character. He is not delegating judgment or acting arbitrarily. He Himself, in the fullness of His righteousness and holiness, is bringing the Flood. Noah, as a man who walks with God, understands that God’s justice and mercy coexist. The coming Flood is both a righteous act against pervasive corruption and a merciful act for those who will be preserved through the ark.

God’s declaration reminds us that judgment always flows from His consistent character for He is holy, just, and merciful all at once. The waters of the Flood, while terrifying, are also a demonstration of God’s faithfulness to His standards and His plan of salvation. In other words, when God says “I, even I,” He is affirming to Noah that this judgment is not impersonal or capricious; it is the direct, measured, and deliberate action of the God who is both just and gracious. Noah’s intimacy with God allows him to see the judgment not only as destruction but also as a part of God’s plan to restore righteousness to the Earth through His preservation of life.
