Genesis 6:20 Daily Devotional & Meaning – God Brings the Animals to the Ark

Daily Verses Everyday! Day 32

“Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every [sort] shall come unto thee, to keep [them] alive.”

This verse continues the theme of God’s careful preservation in the midst of judgment. The command to bring “fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind” emphasizes the order and variety built into creation. Each creature was made with intentional design, and now each one is to be represented on the ark so that life can continue after the Flood. The repeated phrase “after their kind” points us back to Genesis 1, where God created every creature according to its kind. In other words, the Flood was not going to erase God’s creative work but preserve it, ensuring that the Earth would once again be filled with the abundance of life He had originally blessed.

It’s also worth noting that Noah was not responsible for rounding up the animals himself. The verse says they “shall come unto thee.” God not only commanded their preservation but also orchestrated their gathering. This reveals both His sovereignty and His provision. Noah’s role was to obey and prepare the ark, but God Himself brought the creatures to him at the appointed time.

This truth is comforting for us today for when God calls us to a task, He also provides the means to accomplish it. We are not left to carry the weight of His commands on our own strength; He supplies what is needed. This verse also shows us God’s heart for life. The ark was not only about saving Noah and his family but about safeguarding the richness of creation itself. God values every aspect of His creation, from the great cattle that sustain human life to the smallest creeping thing that plays its part in the balance of the Earth. This should shape the way we view the world around us. Creation care is not optional; it is rooted in God’s own care and love for what He has made.

Even more, this detail foreshadows the greater work of salvation in Christ. Just as the animals were drawn to Noah and the ark, Jesus teaches in John 6:44 that, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” Salvation is not something we can achieve by our own effort, for it is God’s initiative from beginning to end. The ark, which preserved life through the Flood, points forward to Christ, who preserves all who are in Him from the judgment to come. In the same way that Noah did not chase down the animals, we do not earn our way into God’s salvation; we are gathered in by His grace.

If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
