Genesis 7:18 Daily Devotional & Meaning – The Ark Floating Above the Floodwaters

Daily Verses Everyday! Day 35

“And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.”

This verse reminds me of when I was a child and would take a bath with a toy boat. No matter how big the splashes I made, the boat remained above the water. I could bang it, tip it, or push it around, and yet, it floated, untouched by the waves I created. That memory comes back to me as I read Genesis 7:18. The ark, small compared to the vastness of the floodwaters, moved steadily across the surface, lifted and kept safe by the power of God. There is a comforting parallel here. Just as that little toy boat was secure no matter what I did in my bathtub, Noah and all who were in the ark were safe despite the chaos surrounding them. The waters prevailed, and there was no stopping the Flood, but the ark rode above them, guided by God’s hand. Its safety was not because of its design alone, or because of Noah’s careful preparation, but because God had ordained it to float, to carry life, and to preserve His plan.

The story of Peter walking on water provides an interesting parallel here. Just as Jesus could walk on the water and Peter could as long as he trusted in Him, we too can navigate life’s storms when our focus remains on God. When Peter took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink, but the moment he reached out, Jesus lifted him up. Similarly, the ark did not sink under the overwhelming floodwaters because God’s power sustained it.

This principle is echoed beautifully in the poem “Footprints in the Sand,” where a man sees only one set of footprints during the hardest times in his life. He questions God, wondering why He seemed absent. God responds that during those difficult moments, He carried him.

The Flood and the ark illustrate this truth on a grand scale: when life is overwhelming and the waters rise around us, God does not abandon us. He carries us, preserves us, and keeps us afloat, even when we feel powerless or afraid. Just as the ark rode the Flood steadily and Peter walked on water as long as he trusted, our security comes from placing our faith in God rather than in our own abilities. The waters of trials may rage, circumstances may threaten to overwhelm, but God’s sustaining hand ensures we are lifted above the chaos. Like the ark, we can remain safe, steady, and above the storm, not because of our own strength, but because we trust in the One who holds all things together.

If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
