Genesis 7:9 Daily Devotional & Meaning – Obedience of Noah and Creation

Daily Verses Everyday! Day 34

“There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.”

Here, we have the third of the four anticipation-building verses, and in this one, we see the emphasis on obedience, not just Noah’s obedience but also the obedience of creation itself to the voice of its Creator. The animals came into the ark “two and two,” according to God’s precise design. Nothing here is chaotic, accidental, or haphazard. It is orderly, structured, and intentional. This verse highlights the fact that when God commands, all of creation responds. From the greatest of beasts to the smallest of creeping things, each obeyed His call and entered the ark. The mention of “male and female” further emphasizes God’s concern for the preservation of life and the continuation of His creation after the judgment. Without this pairing, reproduction would be impossible, and the Flood would have meant a total end to animal life. But God, in His foresight, prepared both for survival through the Flood and also for flourishing afterward. His plan for life always includes a future beyond judgment, a reminder that His discipline is never divorced from His mercy.

It is also striking to note that the animals came “unto Noah.” The ark was built by human hands in obedience to God, but the filling of the ark was something that only God Himself could accomplish. Noah didn’t need to chase, trap, or herd the animals; they came to him under God’s sovereign direction.

This reveals the partnership God intended for Adam in the garden—one He still intends for us today. In Eden, Adam was given the task of tending, naming, and stewarding creation as seen in Genesis 2:15 and Genesis 19–20. Adam’s work was real and meaningful, but it was never apart from God’s sustaining power. The same pattern emerges here as Noah is faithful in his construction, but it is God who fills. This partnership is a reminder that while God calls us to act in faith, the results belong to Him. 1 Corinthians 3:6 explains this perfectly in the spiritual sense by saying, “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”

Being ambassadors of Christ means that, like Christ, we are called to proclaim the good news of God’s redemptive work through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, it is not our responsibility to produce spiritual results in the hearts of those who hear the message, for that is the work of the Holy Spirit.

Just as God orchestrated the coming of the animals into the ark, He is the one who draws people to Himself, softens hearts, and brings about true transformation. Our role is one of faithful obedience, to plant the seeds of the Gospel, to water them with love, teaching, and example, but also to trust that the increase of conviction, repentance, and salvation that comes from Him alone. This principle is beautifully illustrated in John 6:44, where Jesus says, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him.” Just as Noah did not herd the animals into the ark, we cannot coerce or manipulate anyone into salvation. Instead, we faithfully share the truth, demonstrating God’s love through our words and actions, while leaving the work of spiritual birth and growth to the Spirit.

Furthermore, being ambassadors requires humility and patience. In a world that often measures success by visible results, it is easy to become discouraged if people do not respond immediately to our efforts. Yet, the Flood narrative reminds us that God’s timing and methods are perfect. The ark was filled not according to human effort or schedule but according to God’s sovereign design. Likewise, the spiritual fruit of our labor will appear according to His timing, not ours.

Our responsibility is faithfulness, not immediate results. Ultimately, this partnership between human obedience and divine action calls us to trust fully in God’s plan. Like Noah, we must prepare, proclaim, and act in faith, knowing that God is the one who brings life, sustenance, and salvation. Our obedience opens the way for God’s purposes to unfold, but it is God alone who accomplishes the ultimate work. This reminds us that our ministry, evangelism, and daily witness are never in vain, for they are the avenues through which God’s power is displayed, His kingdom advanced, and His redemptive plan fulfilled.

If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
