Daily Verses Everyday! Day 34
“Of clean beasts, and of beasts that [are] not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,”
Here, we have the second of the four anticipation-building verses, and this one explains that thousands of animals came into the ark. This detail might be easy to gloss over, but it holds tremendous significance for understanding God’s provision, order, and care for His creation. The verse notes both clean and unclean animals, fowls of the air, and creeping things of the Earth. In doing so, it paints a picture of completeness, showing that God’s plan for salvation in the ark was not just for humanity but also for the creatures He had made.
The inclusion of “clean beasts” is particularly interesting because the laws of clean and unclean animals had not yet been given in the Mosaic Law. Yet here, God is already distinguishing between them, foreshadowing the sacrificial system that would later be instituted under Moses. Clean animals were used for offerings and worship, and after the Flood, Noah himself would offer burnt sacrifices from the clean animals as an act of thanksgiving in Genesis 8:20. This means that God’s preparation for future worship and covenant relationship was already embedded in the very act of bringing animals into the ark.
Now, God’s hand was definitely at play in bringing the animals into the ark. Anyone who has ever tried to move an animal against its will knows how difficult, if not impossible, that task can be. And in most of our cases, the animal we struggle to move is just a dog or some other domesticated creature. Now imagine trying to bring a hippo into a boat, or a rhino, or an elephant, or even an alligator, a zebra, or a kangaroo. The sheer impossibility of such a task makes it clear that this was no human effort. Noah and his family weren’t animal wranglers with ropes, cages, and tranquilizers; they were witnesses to God’s power and providence. The Creator Himself summoned the creatures, great and small, to come willingly into the ark, proving His mastery over the wildest of beasts and His intimate care for every living thing He had made.
This gathering of animals was a visible sign that God was in control of the entire event—both the judgment that was coming and the salvation He was providing. The animals obeyed the Creator’s call, exhibiting a harmony between God’s will and the natural order. In this way, the gathering of the animals was itself a miracle, a testimony that the Flood was no ordinary event of nature but a divine act of judgment and salvation.
Just as God directed the animals into the ark, so too does He direct the steps of His people, ensuring that His plans of redemption and covenant are carried out with precision.
If you would like to explore Genesis in a sustained, verse-by-verse way with space to reflect, journal, and trace how these foundational truths unfold through Scripture the Verse by Verse book expands these reflections into a unified reading experience. The book gathers these meditations into a structured journey through Genesis, designed to help readers linger in the text and engage God’s Word more deeply over time.
